Since 2012, UNIC has been promoting social responsibility among its members and the stakeholders of the leather supply chain through its UNIC Code of Conduct, a tool that outlines and consolidates the core principles and best practices of the sector.
The purpose of the Code is to support companies that seek to foster the continuous improvement of their internal social climate and to communicate their daily commitment to protecting workers and enhancing human capital, while combating unfair competition arising from the failure to comply with environmental, health and safety, and labor protection standards.
The document reflects the principles of the most important international conventions on labor rights (ILO) and of major voluntary social responsibility standards (SA 8000, ISO 26000), including key requirements regarding environmental protection, business ethics, and consumer safety.
The added value of the Code lies in its adaptation of international principles to the specific characteristics of the tanning sector, also in alignment with the provisions of the National Collective Labour Agreement (CCNL) for the Italian Tanning Industry, for which UNIC acts as the employers’ representative and signatory.
Included in the sector’s CCNL, which references it in several sections, the Code and its objectives are shared with trade unions as part of collective bargaining.
In connection with the adoption of the Code, internal agreements may be established to promote efficiency, flexibility, and employee participation.
All tanning companies that apply the CCNL Concia or other equally representative and formally recognized collective agreements may adhere to the Code.
Compliance with the requirements of the UNIC Code of Conduct and Social Responsibility is verified through third-party audits conducted by the industry certification body (ICEC). Following successful verification, companies are granted the UNIC Social Accountability logo license.
