Founded on April 9, 1946, UNIC – Italian Tanneries is one of the most important and influential trade associations in the global tanning industry. It safeguards the interests of its member companies and represents a strategic sector that is a fundamental component of Italy’s economic and manufacturing framework.
UNIC – Italian Tanneries is a member of Confindustria, the European Confederation of Tanners (Cotance), the International Council of Tanners (ICT), and Confindustria Moda Accessory Division. It also plays an active role in national and international standardization bodies (UNI, CEN, ISO), as well as in numerous technical supply chain initiatives, including ZDHC and SARCA.
UNIC – Italian Tanneries represents an industry that has long been recognized as a global leader for its advanced technological and qualitative development, strong environmental commitment, and innovative approach to stylistic design.
An example of modernity and enhancement of a historic manufacturing tradition, today the Italian tanning industry stands as a benchmark case study for its district-based structure of over 1,100 small and medium-sized enterprises located in Veneto, Tuscany, Campania, and Lombardy, and as a driver of social development, employing approximately 17,000 people.

La Conceria is a publishing enterprise that, since 1893, has been covering topics related to consumption, market trends, economy, and trade within the Italian and international leather industry.
It is a weekly subscription-based magazine, printed in approximately 2,000 copies and also available in digital format. La Conceria serves as a leading news portal for daily updates on the leather, fashion, and luxury supply chains, generating around 20 million online and social media interactions each year.
ICEC is the Institute of Quality Certification for the Leather Sector.
It is the only certification body in Europe and worldwide exclusively specialized in the leather supply chain. Established in 1994 and promoted by Italian tanneries, ICEC counts among its members the national associations of leather goods, footwear, accessories and components manufacturers, furriers, chemical producers, as well as CNR, ENEA, AICQ, SSIP, and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development.

Confindustria is Italy’s main association representing manufacturing and service companies. It is a voluntary membership organization that brings together over 150,000 enterprises of all sizes, employing a total of 5,440,125 people.
Confindustria Accessori Moda brings together the member companies of Assopellettieri, AIP (Italian Fur Association), ASSOCALZATURIFICI, and UNIC – Italian Tanneries.
The Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Pelli e delle Materie Concianti (SSIP) is a National Research Institute established by the Chambers of Commerce of Naples, Pisa, and Vicenza.
Since 1885, it has supported all Italian companies in the tanning sector through research and development, training, product and process certification, laboratory testing, quality control, and technical consultancy.
COTANCE, the European Confederation of Tanners’ Associations, is the representative body of the European leather industry. It is a non-profit organization that promotes the interests of the European tanning sector at the international level.
In addition to representing European tanneries, COTANCE’s mission is to promote European leather both within the European market and globally.
