Rome Celebrates “The Tannery of Pompeii”: A Bridge Between Memory and Future

Yesterday, Thursday, July 10, we presented in Rome, at the Sala Matteotti of the Chamber of Deputies, the volume “The Tannery of Pompeii – Regio I, Insula 5”, produced by UNIC – Italian Tanneries and Lineapelle.

More than a simple account of a restoration, the book gives voice to an ancient craft, still alive at the heart of Italian know-how. Among the speakers were Hon. Gerolamo Cangiano, who opened the event, and Hon. Federico Mollicone, who spoke about culture as a common good, to be protected also through the commitment of the private sector.

UNIC President Fabrizio Nuti reflected on the enduring beauty of an ancient art that stands the test of time, while Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, emphasized the connection between archaeology and the contemporary world.

The more technical aspects were presented by Giuseppe Scarpati, archaeologist and field specialist, who carefully described the excavation and restoration process. The event concluded with Luca Fumagalli, Director of La Conceria, who described the book as a narrative bridge between memory and future — a cultural journey through time and an identity story for the entire tanning industry.

A vivid testimony of how the past continues to speak to us — and a work that preserves and renews the memory of an ancient craft.
